Distinguished Business Leader,
Mr Ron Sim
About 180 Singaporeans in Shanghai gathered to get up close and personal with Mr Ron Sim, Chairman and CEO of OSIM International Ltd at the fourth Distinguished Business Leaders Series organised by the Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) in the city.
Mr Sim spoke candidly about the changes he had witnessed in China since OSIM made its first foray into the Chinese market 16 years ago and the challenges he encountered. His key advice on doing business in China was to always stay above board. Mr Sim also shared that his 30 years of travelling around the world had made him appreciate Singapore’s pro-people and pro-business environment.
He testified that the retail scene in Singapore had shown great vibrancy in recent years and was confident that the completion of the two integrated resorts in 2010 would add to Singapore’s vibrancy in the coming years.
Mr Sim charmed the audience with his candid views during the question-and-answer (Q&A) session. The OS were interested to hear Mr Sim’s experiences in China as well as OSIM’s strategies in the Chinese market. Mr Sim shared that OSIM had to innovate and come up with new products every six months to out-pace the competitors and overcome the intellectual property infringement challenges. Mr Sim added that constant product innovation also provided a wide range of choices for different clientele. On talent management, Mr Sim advised that it was important to adopt an open mind and achieve a good mix of people in the organisation. Mr Sim also shared about OSIM’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. During the lively Q&A session, several OS shared that they had owned OSIM massage chairs for more than a decade, with one OS revealing that he had even brought his massage chair all the way to Europe! The OS continued to interact with Mr Sim over a dinner reception with good food and great company. For many OS present, it was a memorable evening as they had the opportunity to meet with an industry leader in lifestyle and health-related products who had put a Singapore brand name onto the world’s stage.
