‘Abalone King’ shares his success and words of wisdom

Dr Ng addresses a captivated audience

The Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) organised the 31st Distinguished Business Leaders Series featuring Dr Ng Cher Yew, Executive Chairman of Oceanus Group, on 26 June 2010.  About 100 Singaporeans in Beijing enjoyed the evening with Dr Ng as he shared his insights on business and career as well as the secrets of his success.

Dr Ng began his address by sharing with the audience how he painstakingly built his abalone empire that started nineteen years ago in China. He attributed his success to five important values – belief, passion, drive, hard work and perseverance. Dr Ng believed that an entrepreneur must be a risk taker who is constantly on a look out for opportunities but at the same time a visionary who knows where to bring the business towards. He also shared Oceanus’ corporate culture i.e., treat employees as family members, manage workers with the firmness of the military and develop promising employees through training. The audience was captivated by his practical, candid and inspiring presentation.

Speaking from his experience, Dr Ng strongly felt that Singaporeans and Singapore companies could benefit greater through cooperation, particularly, while operating overseas. Emphasising the importance of networking and information sharing, Dr Ng reckoned that Singaporeans should come together and leverage on one another’s strengths.

These included advice for start-ups, succession planning, overcoming challenges which arose from increasing costs and labour shortage in the coastal cities of China as well as managing Chinese workers.

Many OS took the chance to further engage Dr Ng during the dinner reception over the next one-and-a-half hours while savouring delicious abalones, a generous treat from Dr Ng.
