Dr Cheong addressing the audience

Dr Cheong Choong Kong, Chairman of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) Ltd, was the speaker at the sixth Distinguished Business Leaders Series event in Shanghai on 5 November 2010. About 260 overseas Singaporeans gathered to spend an evening with Dr Cheong in the cosmopolitan Chinese city.

With humour and wit, Dr Cheong explained his choice for the topic of his speech. Instead of boring his audience with substantial materials on financial instruments and banking jargons, he chose to share valuable lessons learnt during his 29 years with Singapore Airlines (SIA). Dr Cheong attributed the success of our national carrier to the values that were embedded in its corporate culture – to have a customer-centric attitude, be innovative and competitive. Dr Cheong commended the employees for being the most important asset of SIA. He shared that the same applied in OCBC too.

The audience participated actively
during the Q&A session.

Dr Cheong's speech concluded with a lively question-and-answer session. Questions flowed spontaneously as the audience sought Dr Cheong's views on subjects ranging from the Chinese aviation industry, crisis management to the common principles of success in the aviation and the banking industries. There was a light-hearted moment when a student asked how he was “talent-spotted” to act in so many productions.

The dialogue with Dr Cheong continued over dinner as everyone tucked into a spread of sumptuous Singapore food. It was indeed a wonderful Singaporean get-together with our Distinguished Business Leader!
