Distinguished Business Leader,
Mr Wee Ee Cheong
The Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) organised the inaugural Distinguished Business Leaders Series in Tokyo on 13 November 2009 featuring Mr Wee Ee Cheong, Deputy Chairman and CEO of United Overseas Bank (UOB) Group. The event was attended by over 120 Singaporeans living, studying and working in Tokyo.
Mr Wee took the audience through the history of UOB and spoke about the bank’s transformation since its establishment 74 years ago. Mr Wee also shared with the audience his experience as an Overseas Singaporean studying in the United States and his decision to return to Singapore. Mr Wee gave an insight of UOB’s key strategies and success in navigating through the recent financial crisis. He also shared his experience as the current Chairman of the Association of Banks in Singapore and stressed that liquidity must be the fundamental building block for the banking industry. Mr Wee remarked that moving ahead, UOB would continue to stay prudent and disciplined yet remain bold and nimble. The audience also received useful tips from Mr Wee on some of the core beliefs that UOB held in order to ride the ups and downs of the economy.
Q & A Session
Throughout his speech, Mr Wee kept the audience engaged with his candid sharing and key insights about the banking industry in Singapore and the region. The audience subsequently engaged Mr Wee in a question-and-answer (Q&A) session that centred on the state of Singapore’s economy and UOB’s regionalisation efforts. Mr Wee remarked that the financial crisis had provided an opportunity for UOB and stressed the importance of restoring consumer confidence in the banking industry. On competition from foreign banks, Mr Wee emphasised that UOB must continue to do well in Singapore so that its overseas partners will have confidence in UOB. Many Overseas Singaporeans also took the opportunity to engage Mr Wee during the dinner reception to seek Mr Wee’s views about the various developments in Singapore. The first DBL event in Tokyo was certainly an evening to remember for the Singaporeans as they networked over delicious Singaporean food and had the opportunity to meet with an accomplished industry leader.
