Ms Chua Sock Koong shares the success of SingTel

Distinguished Business Leader,
Ms Chua Sock Koong

The Overseas Singaporean Unit (OSU) organised the third Distinguished Business Leaders Series in Sydney on 13 October featuring Ms Chua Sock Koong, Group Chief Executive Officer, SingTel. About 170 Singaporeans living, studying and working in Sydney were captivated by Ms Chua’s sharing on the transformation of SingTel, its privatisation and eventual public listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange.

Many Overseas Singaporeans gained a better understanding about the SingTel’s business as Ms Chua elaborated on the diversification of SingTel’s businesses and expansion into the region and beyond through strategic acquisitions of telecommunications companies. National pride was evident by the numerous applauses across the ballroom when Ms Chua commented on the successful acquisition of numerous established telecommunications companies, SingTel, the high service standards in Singapore compared to many developed countries and SingTel’s position as the most profitable telecommunication company in the region. She also shared about the corporate social responsibilities of SingTel and Optus including the help rendered to the bushfire victims in Australia and the measures taken to create a more work-life balance working environment in SingTel. Ms Chua, in her speech, also addressed the importance of talent attraction and retention at SingTel.

Q&A session

The Q&A session was a lively one when Ms Chua fielded questions on a range of issues ranging from the perceived glass ceiling for female in the corporate world, how market competition spurred SingTel to improve customer service standard and quality of network coverage; key attributes that SingTel looked for when hiring; and the importance of mentoring and coaching employees to reach their potential.

She also noted the interest among OS on the recent success of SingTel in securing the broadcasting rights to the English Premier League (EPL) and commented on its impact on the pay-TV market and options available to consumers.

She concluded by reiterating the importance of Overseas Singaporeans staying connected with home - facilitated by the wide options to access telecommunications facilities.
