Ms Tham Loke Kheng is a true veteran of the local media industry, with 30 years of experience in content and marketing. She started out at the then-Singapore Broadcasting Corporation as a fresh graduate, and subsequently moved on to roles at then-Singapore CableVision, StarHub, Taiwan Broadband Communications and PCCW in Hong Kong. She took over as CEO of Mediacorp in September 2017, coming full circle from where she had first started.

Ahead of her appearance at Singapore Speakers Series(SSS) in Sydney, we asked her about how her experience overseas shaped her career, and what she missed about home while she was away.

We understand that you were based overseas for some time. What did you miss about Singapore while you were away and how did you recreate the familiarities of home while you were there?

I was based in Taiwan and Hong Kong which are fairly homogeneous societies, so one thing I missed was the diversity of our multicultural society. The different races, the ranges of food and festivals we celebrate, and even Singlish. To deal with it, I cooked a lot and shared our culture through food with new friends.

How have you seen the media industry in Singapore change/grow over the years and how has your overseas experience shaped you professionally and personally?

The industry is so much more vibrant now, with Free-To-Air, Pay TV and Over-the-Top. There’s a much broader scope and many more opportunities for content creators today, with new forms of story-telling e.g. short form videos, user-generated content and digital graphics. Social platforms offer original ideas and provide access to end-consumers like never before.

My overseas stint has certainly helped me to become more cognisant of the different cultures and needs of consumers, and how we must be adaptable and patient when dealing with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

What are you looking forward to sharing with overseas Singaporeans in Sydney about, and what advice do you have for Singaporeans who are thinking of coming home, particularly those who are planning to enter the media industry?

I would like to share Mediacorp’s commitment to adapting to a fast-changing landscape by embracing technology, honing our storytelling skills and driving deeper engagement with communities.

To Singaporeans who are thinking of coming home and entering the media industry, these are challenging but also exciting times. To thrive, you must have passion, be adaptable and be agile.

Ms Tham Loke Kheng will be speaking at the Sydney leg of Singapore Speakers Series on 7 September 2018 (Friday), 6.30pm-9.30pm at The Westin Sydney. Registration commences at 6.30pm.
