They might simply be a sequence of events, shared from one person to another, with origins dating back to hundreds of thousands of years ago. But till today, we just can’t seem to live without stories. Be it through a painting, a television programme or a book, stories remind, inspire and teach us. This year, with 48 years behind her, time has given Singapore and Singaporeans a treasure trove of stories, memories and experiences waiting to be shared. And there’s no better place and time to do so than at the nation’s biggest (floating) platform.
“We have come a long way as a nation and have our own stories to tell,” says Brigadier-General Perry Lim, Chairman of this year’s NDP 2013 Executive Committee. “With our diverse society, we each have unique experiences but still identify with being part of Singapore. This year, we would like to invite Singaporeans to think about our Singapore story.”

With ‘Many Stories…One Singapore’ driving the theme, the stage is set. This year’s NDP Committee is reaching out to every Singaporean, including those abroad, to share their personal stories through words, photos and videos in a project called ‘Our Stories’ and these memories will be showcased in the lead-up to NDP 2013. Not in Singapore? No worries! You can still join in the fun anywhere in the world by contributing your very own heart-felt stories online. For starters, why not begin your story with an introductory tagline ‘I am an overseas Singaporean and this is my story…’ and have them shared under the ‘Our Stories’ section at the NDP website. If every Singaporean abroad shares his/her special story beginning with ‘I am an overseas Singaporean and this is my story…’, wouldn’t that be a sight to behold?
And to all photo-enthusiasts out there, you are not forgotten. From this month, keep those cameras snapping by taking part in the ‘Singapore My Home’ NDP Photography Competition. Capture pictures that you think best express this year’s NDP theme of ‘Many Stories…One Singapore’, submit it through the ‘Our Stories’ section at the NDP website and you might be walking away with one of the many attractive prizes. Winning photographs will also be featured during NDP 2013.
We may still be a couple of months away from NDP, but it’s never too late to be part of the biggest national party of the year. And with Singapore celebrating her 48th birthday this year, I’m sure there are plenty of stories to go around. So what is your story, Singapore? I am an overseas Singaporean and this is my story…
